What is an electric fence system?

It is a system in which large pastures are divided into smaller paddocks, allowing livestock to be concentrated in one small paddock for a period before moving to another. The time livestock spend in each paddock depends on the type of farming operation and the specific crops or forage involved. This type of pasture management is also known as rotational grazing, managed grazing, time-controlled grazing, deferred grazing, and holistic management.

Why is it beneficial?

Managed grazing allows pastures time to rest, enabling the forage to regrow and improving yields. When implemented effectively, it can help farmers increase productivity and livestock weight gain while reducing waste.

The traditional grazing method is known as "set stocking," where livestock are free to graze as they please within a large enclosure. This approach causes livestock to consume their preferred grasses first, potentially leading to overgrazing of these species and the proliferation of unwanted varieties. This can result in weed infestation, weak root systems, and reduced growth rates.
